Registration is open for the IUPUI 2016 MLK Day of Service
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
INDIANAPOLIS -- Registration is now open for IUPUI students, faculty and staff who want to volunteer for community service as part of the annual IUPUI Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.
IUPUI will honor Martin Luther King Jr.'s commitment to service and social justice on Saturday, Jan. 16, at the 16th annual MLK Day of Service, themed "Stand Up, Speak Out." Hundreds of students, faculty and staff are expected to join together in a day of service across Indianapolis to work with more than a dozen community partners. Registration is open until Dec. 4.
Participants will check in at 8 a.m. on Jan. 16 and be assigned to teams of 10 to 12. They will receive breakfast and a T-shirt during the morning program, which includes a keynote speaker. Within their small groups, they will engage in pre-service reflection and educational activities before departing to an assigned service site.
Volunteers will engage in service and post-service reflection activities from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The 2016 community partners include organizations such as Exodus Refugee Immigration, the Ronald McDonald House and Faith Hope Love.
The MLK Day of Service is sponsored by Community Service and Civic Engagement, an entity of the Office of Student Involvement and the Center for Service & Learning. It is one of four annual campus days of service. Other IUPUI days of service include iServe in September, Day of Caring in October and the Cesar Chavez Day of Service in March.
"Days of service are launching pads for student engagement within the greater Indianapolis community," said Niki Messmore, coordinator for community service and civic engagement. "They provide students with an opportunity to learn more about a social issue and how community organizations are working to address inequity within the city. We hope that students exit the event thinking deeply on Dr. King's quote, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'"
