Don Brown to give 2017 commencement address
Donald E. Brown, MD, and Indianapolis tech entrepreneur, will give the 2017 commencement address at Indiana University School of Medicine.
Last December, Dr. Brown gifted $30 million to IU School of Medicine to establish the Brown Center for Immunotherapy, which aims to develop new treatments and cure disease through the use of cell-based immunotherapies. Dr. Brown’s gift is the largest ever from an IU School of Medicine alumnus.
Dr. Brown received a Bachelor of Science in physics from Indiana University Bloomington in 1978 and later enrolled in a combined MD/PhD program with the intent of becoming a laboratory researcher. He later switched his focus to computer science, earning a Master of Science in computer science in 1982 before finishing medical school in 1985.
Dr. Brown launched his first software company, Dealership Programming Inc., while still in medical school. The company made it easier for car dealerships to calculate monthly loan payments for customers financing cars. In 1988, Dr. Brown co-founded Software Artistry Inc., a developer of customer support software that was later acquired by IBM. In 1994, Dr. Brown started Interactive Intelligence, which became a leader in call center and communication technologies. Interactive Intelligence was acquired in December, 2016, by Genesys Telecommunications Laboratories Inc.
Indiana University School of Medicine commencement will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2017, in the Sagamore Ballroom at the Indiana Convention Center.
